Message from the Leaders

Hello and welcome to Taunton Deane and West Somerset.

From countryside to coast and village to town, there are few places in Britain that combine such beauty, ambition and diversity as our part of South West England.

Our area boasts a wide range of sporting and leisure attractions (including Somerset County Cricket Ground and Taunton Racecourse), excellent maintained and independent schools as well as the tranquil Quantock and Blackdown Hills AONBs, Exmoor National Park and south west coastline.  This all combines to provide a high quality offer in which to invest, live and work.

Our councils have great ambition for our people, place and the prosperity of our communities as well as for our organisation itself.

We are currently on a journey of significant organisational change, delivering an ambitious, fast-paced, transformation programme of work focused on meeting the increasing expectations of our customers.

Having delivered on our earlier commitment to join up the officer structure of our two councils, we are now in the process of delivering a single new district council for the two areas of Taunton Deane and West Somerset by 1 April 2019 and truly transform how our public services are delivered.

We are changing every element of the way we are organised and operate; moving away from traditional service based structures that encourage silo mentalities, to a new operating model of borderless and flexible ways of working – a place where hierarchies will not get in the way of delivering a truly excellent customer experience.

In parallel with this internal change we are in the process of delivering a major growth and regeneration programme across the district, with ambitious plans for housing, commercial and leisure development and the infrastructure to support it.

Sustainable growth is central to the vision. This approach recently saw Taunton awarded the prestigious Garden Town status, the first town in the South West. As a Garden Town, we are committed to making Taunton more prosperous and sustainable with better transport links, better services and facilities, and conserving our valuable green space for future generations. Our aim is to ensure that our communities have the very best of both town and country.

We have an innovative business community, a recent example of which saw businesses in Minehead work together to deliver a successful Business Improvement District. A project which is part of wider plans to regenerate Minehead seafront, led by our Councils.

The area is also home to Hinkley Point C, a £20bn project to build the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK, which will provide low-carbon electricity for around six million homes. We are working hard with EDF Energy and communities to ensure we maximise the potential for jobs and skills in the area whilst minimising the disruption to the local population, preserving present local services and leaving a legacy for the future.

We are excited to hear from individuals who have genuinely bought in to the vision and values of our organisation, with the passion and drive to help us achieve our ambitions for our communities.

Best wishes
